HLF – Day 6

In the last day of the conference we went to the SAP St. Leon-Rot. The day was divided in two parts, in the morning the last talks and in the afternoon the talks and panels were more about what the young researchers can do with the help of industry (in terms of research or changing career paths to go and work in industry).

Sir Michael Francis Atiyah (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Atiyah) he began the day walking the audience through the theories and relations behind math and computer science from Maxwell to Turing. His talking was amazing, he captured all the public attention with his charism and jokes.

Vinton Gray Cerf (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinton_Cerf), he does not need introduction. He was the most “business” laureate, whenever you looked for him there were at least a dozen young researchers following him. And in his talk he just showed more reasons for that. He talked about his current work on NASA and DARPA, where he talked about interplanetary communication (internet). How they are doing, what challenges they faced and how to deal with it.

Leslei Valiant (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_Valiant) presented the close computer science are with neuroscience. He gave a very good talk, but I have to say that my skills to understand about neuroscience were a bit challenged.

Stephen Smale (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Smale) gave his talk with his lungs and inspiration, without presentations. He had a white board as support and nothing more, he discussed about his experience and about thoughts for the future.

In the afternoon, the session started with a panel saying what is the currently situation of research in Germany and how close the industry is to research. Some points were well made, the diversity is needed, we still have an issue that need attention on that point.

In the panel sessions, the panelists switched rooms and we have the chance to ask them about research inside SAP, how they build software, how far from PhD graduation a person could be considered for a position in industry, among other interesting questions were made by us, the young researchers.

After the panels, we went for the Farewell Dinner inside the Heidelberg Castle. But first we had the opportunity to do a guided tour with a guide dressing and acting as someone living in the 17th century.

The castle is amazing and I has a lot of history, the dinner was at the main hall of the castle.
